Marry Me

Marry Me (Zebra Historical Romance)
 HER HEART WAS LOCKED AWAY
Rhyne Abbott is fierce, brave, and used to a life of isolation on her father's spread on the outskirts of Reidsville, Colorado. But when, overcome with sickness, she collapses, she knows she must return to town if she is to have any hope of recovery. Only there is no place for her but the new doctor's home, and he wants more than just to heal Rhyne. He wants her hand in marriage.
UNTIL ONE MAN FOUND THE KEY
Doctor Cole Monroe's hands are already more than full with his orphaned little sister to look after, and yet somehow he can't resist the magnetic pull of Rhyne's bewitching eyes—or her tempting kiss. But convincing her to trust him won't be easy. For Rhyne's heart needs as much tender care as her ailing body. And the only cure is the thing she most fears: to let herself fall in love.

Marry Me (Zebra Historical Romance) by Jo Goodman- Again, I start in the middle of a series. However! This time, the back story isn't really needed. I'm sure anyone who had read the first story would love having a glimpse into Rachel and Wyatt's HEA, but again nothing is lost by not having read their story. The story is set in 1880's Colorado. Cole is a doctor, unhappy in New York for his research in medicine isn't appreciated or even regarded. Due to the well meaning mischief of his younger sister and ward, Whitley, Cole takes a position halfway across the country. Moving from well known, affluent doctor in NY to small town, fix it all doctor. Ryhne is a bit of a paradox. Raised as a boy, she struggles coming to terms with her own and everyone else's realization that she is in fact a woman. Rhyne comes to love Cole and his younger sister, but due to her past doesnt think she is good enough for them. Also in the mix is Rhyne's bastard of a father who thrives in misery and despises his daughter more than anything. The outcome is obvious, Rhyne and Cole fall in love, but getting there is all the fun.
This is a great story. In fact, I loved it. The characters are well thought out and you begin to care for them and want things to just hurry up and be easy so they can be happy. The only character I didn't really care for was Whitley. Although they mention that she is spacey, and seems thoughtless and carefree to me she just seemed stupid. Well, she is stupid or the author doesn't know how 16 year old girls act or speak or think. There are some touchy subjects.  There is abuse, neglect, rape and murder abound. Some of these details  aren't brought into the story until after you already have developed a connection with the characters, making them that much more awful. Personally, I wanted to climb into the book and strangle Judah to death myself, since no one else seemed to want to. There is romance, and sex. The romance is carefully forged after friendship, the sex, well, it isn't the passionate stuff. It is the sweet, awww kinda sex. Not bad, but not the nail biting, turn the page as fast as you can stuff either.
Overall, this book is a keeper. Having only the digital copy, I think I may need to invest in a paperback version for my bookcase.
